Peter Mikhael - Pope Sixtus and Domenico Fontana: The Story of a Patron and an Architect


After being elected pope in 1585, Sixtus V began restoring power to a weak papal state. Sixtus V approached the city's problems from the perspective of an administrator and that of a pilgrim, strengthening the economy and infrastructure while restoring key religious sites. The pope employed Domenico Fontana as the papal architect, and together, they brought energy and vitality to Rome.
